KIVA loans, a 2014 recap and gracias

As 2014 comes to an end, we would like to remind you that we and our 15+ businesses are grateful for your continued support.

We are also still working hard to open our doors, and you can help! 2 future Mercado businesses recently launched campaigns to support their business through a 0% interest KIVA loan. Kaah Neighborhood Market and BARRIO, two anchor tenants in the Portland Mercado, are trying to reach $5,000 and $6,000 goals, respectively — capital that will  help them buy equipment and hire employees to start their businesses in the Mercado.

You have the opportunity to invest in both of these businesses to ensure that there is local and tropical grocery and produce items, as well as beer and wine to go with all of the diverse foods at the Mercado. Please consider lending $25 or more to help these two very important Mercado businesses reach their goals. Remember: when their goal for the loan is reached, you get your contribution back to invest again or to keep! Win/win.

We are also still fundraising through the Willamette Week Give Guide Campaign, where we have reached 35% of our goal. Click here to help us get there before the end of the year.

Hacienda Community Development Corporation (CDC) recently received a $50,000 grant from NALCAB—National Association for Latino Community Asset Builders. This grant will continue to support Hacienda CDC’s mission by implementing a new food-business training curriculum for Latino food entrepreneurs with their partner Zenger Farm, a leader in the local and sustainable food economy.

According to Victor Merced, Executive Director, “With support from NALCAB, Hacienda CDC will work hand in hand with Latino entrepreneurs in the Portland area to support the expansion or start up of their business. We will accomplish this through business coaching, planning, helping them access additional capital and marketing to increase their business revenues and create jobs.”

We are very grateful for this funding, as it will help the small businesses in the Portland Mercado become a true success. Thank you NALCAB!

With the generous support of the Sam’s Club Giving Program, NALCAB awarded $1.1 million to 24 small business projects across 17 states that are managed by community and economic development nonprofit organizations.
